Excitement & Downtime

Happy Weekend from me!  This past weekend was simple and fun.  In between a few scheduled activities and a few spontaneous events that were all especially good, we took this weekend with stride and ease.  And let's not forget about the weather.  Oh heavens, it was perfect.  I've been waiting for winter to shift into spring for so long, and I think Saturday and Sunday the shift was made.  While I wish I had a peace and joy that was deep within me, not dependent on the weather, it's just not the case.  Warm sunny weather=warm sunny Meg.  That's just the way it is.

Friday night was a heck of a good time.  John took the kids to his parents for a visit (where fun was had) while a baby shower went down at our house.  Ladies, I'll say this: gone are the days of showers on early Saturdays or late Sunday afternoons.  Night showers are the way to go, and I'll talk about that in another post.  For now, I'll stick to the fun that we had.  Thirty women gathered together, shower me with excitement.

Saturday was casual and unfolded slowly: tickle fights, laughter, and coffee sipping were the top orders of business.  John's all about the Saturday morning, getting the kids breakfast and such while I get to wake up slowly.  He usually makes something fun for breakfast, then spends the rest of the morning in the den playing with the kids.  This sets the tone for the day as I grab my coffee and slip into to join them.  It gets all gushy-sweet, and we give each other looks that say, "pinch me, is this real?" or "can you believe they're really ours?"  It's over-the-top, family fun.

During nap time on the weekends, John and I take turns slipping to the climbing gym.  Saturday was my day, and that's when it happened: I got myself into a climbing gym photo shoot for their billboard.  It happened later that night after the kids were in bed.  Climbing photo shoot?  That was a blast, and an event that I never thought I would participate.  I was by-far the rookie climber, but that didn't bother me because we had fun.  More on that later as well.

Sunday was a little more low key.  We stayed home from church because Fern had a stomach bug.  She was pitiful but still in good spirits, just a mild version.  She was still up for a good sunny-day stroller ride through our hood.  Burl ended up spending a portion of that day with my mom, which made for a quiet afternoon for me.  Reading outside for a couple hours?  Don't mind if I do, especially when I'm swept into a story and adventure about The Last American Man.  For the second time.

Sunday night we had an impromptu pizza party picnic with my homefry, Patty, and her shaggy companion, Farley.  The kids were equally in love and timid of him, just as they should be.

John started watering our grass at twilight this weekend (just put down some seed), and naturally Burl's taken part.  There is something slow and careful about this in my head.  It's borderline magical for me.  Wait until the sun sets.  Position the sprinkler. Turn it on. Wait. Repeat.  During that wait part, I found and captured a cute little moment between these two.  That memory I got? It's like the theme song for this weekend.  Ya know, if pictures were songs and such.  It says to me that the best combination is a little bit of excitement paired with a little bit of downtime.

What a great combo.  It felt like a full weekend, and it felt too short all the same.  It's the perfect ebb and flow of a good weekend.  Again, I have to give props to Spring for finally showing up and bringing its warm sun and flip-flop weather with her.  It played a big role in how things went down at our house, and I'm not going to deny that she made things better for us.  I can't wait for more!
